not necessarily, Canada is actually pretty easy still ties with france and UK. most places grant 3 - 6 mths visas with the interuption of a week or two or four. that's when you go on holidays or decide to move to a different country.
Travelling within the EU involves less and less papers (Schengen Agreement).

Best is to be a student...
