Actually, Nuevo Progreso is the Mexico that I remember from the 70s. It was wonderful. Perfectly safe. I never felt threatened even once. It's not that the narcos aren't there, they are. But they are on their best behavior because they have their pharmacies and dental clinics there and they want the Norte Americanos to be able to spend their money safely at least in one place on the border. It's near Weslaco. That where my hotel was. I want to go back to do the tourist thing there. It's a really fun little town.
