The lyric “Are we human or are we dancer?” reflects a commentary on societal conformity and the loss of individuality, inspired by a quote from journalist Hunter S. Thompson.

Origin of the Lyric
The line comes from Human, a 2008 song by The Killers. Lead singer Brandon Flowers revealed that the lyric was inspired by a remark from Hunter S. Thompson, who criticized modern society by saying America was “raising a generation of dancers,” implying people were following rules and trends rather than thinking independently. Flowers adopted this idea to question whether humans act with autonomy or simply follow societal expectations.
