Armin Van Buuren - State of Trance 2004


While my passion for dance music transcends its various genres, my preference is for the more radio-friendly and vocal variety. I typically reserve listening to trance compilations for long car rides, or when I just need to chill and clear my thoughts. The latest compilation from Armin Van Buuren, A State of Trance 2004, is perfectly suited for such occasions.

Disc one leads with Mark Otten – "Tranquility," which accurately sets the mood and overall theme for most of the rest of the album. "Tranquility" transitions seamlessly into "Sahara," one of the few tracks with a memorable melody. To me, the melodic and vocal elements are what separate just another track from a bona fide song; vocals are sparsely scattered throughout the two discs. The male vocals in "Velvet Morning" by Kyau vs. Albert compliment the instrumentation beautifully without being overpowering. "Seriously in love, seriously in pain…" make the brief lyrics very relatable as we know the two (love and pain) often go hand in hand.

One of my favorite songs of the 26 tracks featured is "Satellite" by Oceanlab. Justine’s timeless voice with Above and Beyond’s signature production style make for some of the most GORGEOUS music ever recorded. Mr. Van Buuren closes disc one with his own "Burned with Desire" which also feature’s Justine Suissa’s heavenly voice.

Disc 2 opens with "Kubik," which starts off as a couple of "space-age" sweeping sounds, then builds nicely into a light, bouncy groove. The next few tracks are very ambient and Enigma-esque; track 3 is fittingly called "The Ambience." There are some minor tribal elements in Perry O’Neil’s remix of Mind Circles, and each track/song gets progressively harder from this point through the end of the disc. "Naked Angel," with its melancholic piano and airy "Aaahs", is where the mood of the album really intensifies and the energy level eventually starts to "Rise." Envio’s "Time to Say Goodbye" by name alone would have fit better at the end of the album, but also, it is my favorite song on disc 2 and would have made for a nice ending.

If you’re looking for a compilation of hard, driving, big-room dance-floor-filling trance, you need to look (or listen) somewhere else. One must appreciate this compilation for its musical merits as representing this particular style of trance well. Overall, this is a great CD for what it is.
