I've had a Rotty and a Pitbull run towards me at a very fast pace, while in a park, at about 11:00 pm. All I did was put my hand down for them to sniff when they reached me, and hoped for the best.

They ended up licking my hand and sitting down, letting me pet them. I was horrified, but releived.

dogs, as well as most animals can smell the scent you emanate from fear (sweat), as humans we don't smell it
