i visited a remote village in portugal a couple years ago. the outside of the buildings, roads, etc, is almost unchanged from the 1800s, but the inside is modernized. cold stone all over the place, the roads barely big enough for a horse or oxen, and its bidder cold.

thats what i thought of.

Cool. Village name? Will look in Google street view. Guess you mean bitter cold.
