Americans, particularly within Discogs, want to dictate how names should be spelt – according to their own rules. I do not agree with that approach. On SoundCloud, for example, you will often see the artist's own, self-chosen spelling, which in many cases reflects the conventions of their native language.


Within Discogs there has been a fundamental difference of opinion for many years. Some contributors are perfectly happy to follow the 'America knows best' approach without question. I belong to the group of volunteers who believe that the spelling rules of an artist's own language deserve to be respected. If an artist chooses to write their name entirely in lower case, or even to place a capital letter at the end of each part of their name, then that is their choice.


The United States undoubtedly has considerable influence around the world, and that's perfectly fine. However, it does not follow that the USA should decide how names are written in other languages.


One more point about Discogs: almost every piece of information in the database can be edited later if necessary. One notable exception, however, is an artist's name. That is why you will sometimes come across Dutch, Belgian or German artists whose names appear either with or without particles such as 'van', 'de', 'van der' or 'ter' being capitalised.

In my opinion, only the artist has the right to decide how their name should be written, and other platforms should respect and follow that choice.
