TRANCEXPRESS 9-February 2009

halfway thru...

track selection: top notch. great stuff all the way, unsurprisingly with the exception of track 2 :grinning2: other than that really good.

mixing: beatmatching was good/perfect for the most part, only once or twice slightly offbeat, but not bad. do you use prelistening and the +/- buttons to adjust it when necessary, or do you trust the SYNC alone?

as for timing, definitely room for improvement there. be aware of the fact that there's 4 beats in a bar (a bass kick, or "boom" is what you will hear as a beat), and that the first beat (called "the 1") in each bar has special significance. VDJ tries to guess where the 1 is (it puts the big block underneath, and leaves the small blocks for 2, 3 and 4), but gets it wrong many times. it's up to you to figure out where the actual 1 is. (i think you got that part right though, at least didn't notice any transition being out of beat that way - just telling you anyway though).

also be aware of the fact that 4 bars (that's 16 beats) make up a phrase, and that you always get pairs of phrases. so you always get groups of 8 bars (32 beats). there's exceptions to this rule, but they're very rare, and you'll notice them once you've figured that part out. VDJ doesn't help you with this part at all, and this part is also where you're getting it wrong currently. align those groups of 8 bars to each other (in both tracks) and your transitions will improve a lot. especially it will enable you to take the eq-ing part of mixing to the next level, letting you cut parts of the tracks instead of just fading.

the very fisrt beat of a track will always be the first beat of the first bar in such a group of 8 bars. in some tracks you won't hear an actual bass kick (a "boom") there, as some mute the bass in the intro, so you'll hear a kind of "click" only. it will be a beat nevertheless.

the intro of a track is usually 32, 48 or 64 bars (not beats!) long (all multiples of 8), after that it goes into the main part. same applies to the outro of a track, this is where you can start aligning the tracks to each other - if you do it properly, the main part of the next track will come in exactly at the same time when the main part of the old track is ending.

hope this is all understandable, feel free to ask if it's not. keep going :good:

thanks for your feedback dfx and the track # 2 is there because i think is a bit old and i like some old vocal tracks and it's Pierre Pienaar remix, the energy is there, the track doesn't sound like pop you know what i mean:)

yes i do pre-listening and i use somewhere in the config of VDJ where it says automatic beatmatching, i use the smart option, so i need to adjust the beatmatching with the arrows key at keyboard when they are off beat.

And thanks for the explanations dfx:)

Hello Piccoli!

After having missed a lot of your sets, due to incredibly little time I'm back on track, downloading your set now :)

I see a lot of my favourites popping up in the tracklist, thus it will be great:
E.g. the gorgeous track Hodel & Hornblad - Hydrogen [Michael Angelo RMX]

Well, i'll leave a better review after listening :)

Cheers! :flowers:

ok, very good, that confirms my suspicion and explains why there isn't anything offbeat badly, as it happens when you trust VDJ alone :)

for that fact the bot-voice sounds very realistic:)

I heard the whole set - very nice - good work:grinning:
I only know some of the tracks:)

Hi Picco. I loved your set. I listened to it a total of 5 times. It was massive. I loved that it was long (over 2 hours!), and your track selection was outstanding. You had favorites of mine and tracks that I hadn't heard before. Not being a DJ myself, to me, your transitions sounded excellent. I only heard one or two that weren't "dead on".

After reading what dfx said, it explained why you might have missed one or two, but one or two out of 2 full hours is fantastic! He is correct about the #1 beat and the groups of bars. You can clearly hear them. I often count them mentally as I hear them. Most are 16, or 32, long ones are 64, although I have heard a few tracks that really stretch it out, but it's excessive and unnecessary and I'm usually bored by the time the break finally comes.

All I can say is to keep doing it. Your set was a LOT better than many of the shows I hear on AH. I imagine that you are well aware of that, too. Keep doing it, Picco. You are very good. (kiss) :super::dance::mml::hug::cat:

edit: I like your bot, too. She sounds great. :grinning:

Well piccoli, you have more than excelled your self with this latest set. A beautifully crafted set full of fine tunes. This would, for me at least, have been a great show to listen to peak time. I would have been more than satisfied to sit through two hours of this. And the little voice over, not over indulgent or constantly present in the mix to destroy the mood as some are guilty of, added an extra touch of class to your production.

So you are showing now that you are more than just the sites top poster but one who is leading the way in producing high quality trance sets of your own that set the standard. And with this set at least more than match the ones of the professional djs here.

Keep up the good work piccoli, i'm looking forward to more of this:wink:
