What I meant to say is, I wonder if two huge cities have ever joined to form a mega city.
The middle east is developing a tourist mecca. They know the oil won't last forever, and it will run out this century. Or at the very least, people will start to go towards more environmentally friendly substitues.
Because they know they can't keep selling oil forever, they are building these amazing structures. In time, their source of income will turn from oil, to tourism.
Because without either of those, what have they got to offer? Sand? Dubai is looking after its long term interests.
