At the office, we turned to KUbuntu btw - a very multi-media friendly distribution ​

My experience as well. Even more so w.r.t. the *BSD's. IMHO,when it comes to Java, nothing is going to outshine Open/Solaris. Next best is probably Windoze, but that's a whole 'nother can of worms that represents "last ditch" option for me.
