Recently in The Times Q&A section a question was asked about Netherlands vs Holland as the correct name for that country. The answer said that Holland strictly refers only to two southern provinces. Nederlands is the official name and appears on currency and stamps.

Holland, Netherlands and the Dutch

The correct name of the country is " The Netherlands " which means: ' the low lands '. In French: Pays Bas. In Dutch: Nederland. As especially the west and norhtern parts are flat and largely ' below sea level ' , protected against the Northsea by dikes since many centuries. The western part has two provinces, called ' North Holland ' and ' South Holland '. These are - since dawn of time![]()
the most densely populated parts of the small country at the mouth of rivers Rhine, Maas and Schelde. The most wealthy and ( political ) influencial ones too. The bigger cities Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague are all in North and South Holland Provinces. In sòme parts of history, because of the lets say : ' dominance ' of the two provinces, the whole country was called ' Holland '. Holland derives from ' Holt land ' ( = wood land ) for in ancient times, there were woods and wet marshlands. Result of low lying area, and the mouth of rivers + sea tides
