well over playing is one thing, but it actually seems these people have a big dislike towards these tracks and would rather see them not played at all.
I'm not basing my tracklists on public opinions though, i just play what I like myself

of course the way to go is to play what you like, as long as you know your audience does too, otherwise what's the point in making a set and putting it out for people to listen to it ?
EDIT: as for playing tunes you know are already overplayed IMO is lack of effort to find tracks that are not, and make yuor set unique.
